The Big Rocks

Put the big rocks (the most important things) in your life first!

What is the most important rock that your life is built on?
What are the other big rocks in your life?
How does this show with how you steward your time and money?

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.‘ ” (Matthew 21:42)

The story about “The Big Rocks” is a great visual example of the importance of putting the most important things in your jar of life first and letting everything else fit in afterwards.

A professor teaching a time-management class to some college students, took out a wide-mouth glass jar and set some large rocks next to it. He filled up the jar until the last big rock was at the top and then asked if the jar was full. All of the students said “yes.” Then the professor put some gravel on the table and filled the jar until it came up to the top. When he asked the students if the jar was full, only half said “yes” this time. The professor repeated this process two more times with sand and finally water. When he asked the purpose of this demonstration, a student raised his hand and answered “If you’re efficient, then you can always fit in more things in your life.” The professor responded “No! The big rocks represent the most important things in your life. If you don’t fit those in first, either they won’t fit in or when they go in they will make a big mess.”

While I had gone to church my entire life, believed that Jesus was God’s son, and used to say God was my top priority, this wasn’t true if you looked at how I spent my time and money. I didn’t really know Jesus. After saying “Jesus, I commit my life to you” on January 6, 2001, Jesus became my cornerstone – the foundation for my life and all my relationships. It’s so reassuring to go through each day knowing that Jesus loves me.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me a second chance in my life to get my priorities in order by dumping out my jar of mess that I had created and allowing me to put Jesus in first and then my family next. Thank You for redeeming my marriage – for being the third strand of the cord. Bless those receiving this message with a godly order of priorities and Your peace that passes all understanding. Thank You Jesus! Amen.
