Rooted in the Word

17 Sep

Any Christian who is not rooted in the Word of God has no roots!

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9)

In April 2002, I took my daughter to Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg Virginia so she could hear Dr. Jerry Falwell preach for the first time. It just happened to be Dr. Falwell’s 50th anniversary of committing his life to Christ.

Dr. Falwell shared his personal testimony, including what his life was like before Jesus, how he met Jesus, and what happened afterwards. Immediately after meeting Jesus at the age 17, Dr. Falwell bought a Bible and began reading and memorizing the Book of Romans. Soon he enrolled in seminary school and following that started Thomas Road Baptist Church.

In its first 50 years, Thomas Road Baptist Church has 1) birthed and built the largest Christian educational system in the world, 2) an international media ministry, 3) a global mission network in much of the world, including nation-wide church planting across America; 4) a salt ministry which provides social direction to the culture and local, as well as national, outreach ministries to alcoholics, drug addicts, prisoners, unwed mothers and the poor.

Together Dr. Jerry Falwell and Dr. Elmer Towns co-founded Liberty University (LU). I am a spiritual grandchild of LU. Pastor Mark Jarvis, who led me to a personal relationship with Jesus, went to LU. Mark has trained me to be a champion for Christ. Pastor Matt Gregory, my current pastor, also went to LU and he is champion for Christ. Matt and his wife Elyana have blessed my family tremendously.

In April 2002, Dr. Falwell’s take home message was that any Christian who is not rooted in the Word of God has no roots. He said many churches are popping up where people sing to God and wave their hands in the air, but the members are not rooted in the Word of God. When bad storms of life come, they will be tossed around by the wind.

Are you rooted in the Word of God?

Prayer Power
Jesus, You are the vine and we are the branches. Without You we can do nothing, but with You all things are possible. Bless me and those who read this message with a deep abiding in You so we will bear much eternal fruit and thereby glorify Your Father (John 15:8). Thank You Jesus. Amen.
