Sunday Inspiration: Be prepared for a most unusual year

28 Sep

“…There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars…Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” (Luke 21:25a, 28)

It is rare that Scripture, science, and history align with each other, yet the last three series of Four Blood Moons have done exactly that. Are these the “signs” that God refers to in His Word? If they are, what do they mean? What is their prophetic significance?

Four Blood MoonsRosh Hashanah, a two-day celebration known as the Feast of Trumpets marking the beginning of the Jewish New Year, began on the evening of Wednesday September 24. This new year (5775) in God’s calendar is particularly significant for several reasons.

First, it is the seventh year (Shemitah or Sabbath year) of the seven-year agricultural cycle mandated by the Torah for the Land of Israel and still observed in contemporary Judaism. The events of 9-11 took place during a Shemitah and so did the global financial crisis in 2008.

Second, it is the last year (49th year) in seven seven-year cycles, which will lead to the start of the year of Jubilee in Sept 2015 when debts are to be forgiven.

And finally, this Shemitah is occurring in the midst of four blood moons, all appearing on Jewish feast days – Passover 4/15/14, Sukkot 10/08/14, Passover 4/04/15, and Sukkot 4/28/15 (Feast of Tabernacles). A blood moon is when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon. The sun shining through the atmosphere of the Earth casts a red shadow on the moon. And so the moon appears to be red.

In his best-selling book “Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change”, Pastor John Hagee explains the historic significance of four blood moons occurring in a two-year cycle, all on Jewish feast days. In the past, the rare appearance of four blood moons on Jewish feast days has coincided with major events for Israel and the Jewish people. In each of these four blood moon seasons, something that began in tragedy ended in triumph.

In 1492, Spain expelled the Jews. Columbus also discovered America, which became a safe haven for the Jewish people.

In 1948, Israel was reborn as a nation. After 2,000 years, God supernaturally brought the Jewish people from many nations of the world and a nation was born in a day. That again was a supernatural something that happened following the tragedy of the Holocaust.

In 1967, Israel won the Six-Day War and recaptured Jerusalem. For the first time in 2,000 years, Jerusalem and the State of Israel were together again.

According to John Hagee, the heavens are God’s billboard. The Bible prophesies about the blood moons:

Acts 2:16-21 – “But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.'”

Rosh Hashanah is believed to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. It is a celebration filled with thanksgiving and rejoicing. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) and eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a “sweet new year”. Most of us have experienced recent challenges and we know that “better days” are ahead of each of us, both individually, and collectively, as a body.

Listen to the Shofar (trumpet) sounding, alerting God’s people to be ready

It’s interesting that this morning my pastor began a 12-week sermon series titled “The End Times.” He said this is the first time in the 13-year history of the church that he felt led to preach on bible prophecy.
