What if …?

01 Dec

‘My purpose in life is simply to glorify God.  We have to be careful that we don’t let the pursuit of our life’s goals, no matter how important they may seem, cause us to lose sight of our purpose.  I coach football.  But the good I can do to glorify God along the way is my real purpose.  I want to help people see the path to eternal life through Christ, to enjoy an abundant life now, and to fulfill their God-given purposes here.’  – Tony Dungy, Head Coach, Indianapolis Colts, 2007 Superbowl Champions

By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life. (Proverbs 22:4)

What if I started each day on my knees in December 2007?
How might God change me? How might God use me?
What might God do in my family? In my career? In the remainder of my life?

In my devotional two days ago, I shared how the Holy Spirit gave me the powerful revelation on November 15 that I will fulfill my mission by serving my wife. In yesterday’s devotional, I shared how we experience the power of God’s love on our knees. I realize God is taking me to a new level of humility before Him and He wants that to manifest in my marriage and family. God is inviting you to come along for the ride too.

While preparing yesterday message “On My Knees,” I was suddenly struck with the “What if’s…” I didn’t plan to send a devotional today (Saturday), but this changed my mind.

What if I started each day in December 2007 on my knees?
What if 10% of people reading this devotional started their days on their knees?
What if 10% of people in my church congregation started their days on their knees?
What if 10% of people in Culpeper started their days on their knees?
What if 10% of people in Virginia started their days on their knees?
What if 10% of the people in each state in America started their days on their knees?
What if 10% of people in each country started their days on their knees in Jesus’ name?

Tony Dungy was the first Black coach to ever win the Superbowl. Immediately after his team’s victory, both Tony and the owner of the Indianapolis Colts publically thanked God for their successes during their initial remarks on the victory stand in front of hundreds of millions of people on TV. Now, that’s giving glory to God. Tony’s statement above sets a standard all followers of Jesus should strive for.
