Recently I discovered that my pastor is taking an engaged couple through a lengthy pre-marital preparation course. I think that is wonderful to avoid disasters since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound (ton) of cure.

While looking for links for this week’s devotionals, I was led to John Piper’s website called “Desiring God.” There I found a very practical message titled “Topics for Conversation When a Man and a Woman Are Considering Marriage to Each Other.”

Here are some of the many questions a couple should address before getting married:

What do you believe about . . . everything?
How important is it to be part of a small accountability/support group?
What would our family devotions look like? Who leads this?
How are tasks shared in the home?
If and when, should we have children? Why? How many?
What about school? Home school? Christian school? Public school?
How do you make money decisions?
Will we go to bed angry at each other?
What is our view of getting help from friends or counselors?
Should the wife work outside the home? Before kids? With kids at home? After kids?
Do you have, or have you had any, sicknesses or physical problems that could affect our relationship?

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, being prepared is so important, especially when it comes to getting married. Next to accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the most important decision we can ever make is choosing who we will marry. I pray that my two children will marry godly spouses and that they will prepare adequately before getting married. May divorce never have any part in the future of my children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. Thank You Jesus. Amen.
