Sunday Inspiration: We Remember

16 Dec

Last week I began a series of Christmas messages using Isaiah 9:6 as the theme verse

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

I planned to title today’s message “Mighty God,” but after the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday Dec 14, I felt it was appropriate to dedicate this message to the families and friends of the victims of that shooting.

During this Christmas season, many people celebrate “For unto us a child is born,” but for some of the parents in Newtown the reality is “For unto us, a child is dead.”

Some things we will never understand on this side of eternity. The killing of 20 innocent children is one of them. The Bible says it rains on the just and the unjust. This tragedy is a reminder of how short and precious life really is.

My Jewish friend Jeff Bernstein sent me a message this morning titled “What Are You Dedicated To? The Last Day of the Feast of Dedication.” In his email, Jeff attempts to get at the root of the problem behind the growing violence in America.

I found these videos particularly helpful to minister to me. Hopefully, you will find them helpful too.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of life. We praise You as the God of love and light and ask You to shine your light through acts of kindness in Newtown to bring hope to the broken-hearted. Rain down your love and mercy on all those who are hurting as a result of this tragedy. Show Yourself strong as Mighty God and Prince of Peace. We bless You LORD. Amen and hallelujah!

Blessings for God’s peace that passes all understanding!
