Sunday Inspiration: Leaders Know the Difference

20 Jan

Dear friend,

This past week during a Master’s Mind Coaching (MMC) call, one of the team members brought up Proverbs 21:1 and what Dr. John Maxwell had written in the Maxwell Leadership Bible about that. This morning while reading my Bible, I stumbled across that scripture and Dr. Maxwell’s message.

Leaders Know the Difference

Leaders can and should make their plans, but they must never forget that it is God who controls the future. “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD,” says the Bible. “Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1) Successful leaders remember this and therefore know the difference between being in charge and being in control.

We kid ourselves if we think we are in control. We may have charge of a group, but the best we can do is remain under control. God is the Ultimate Leader, and He is forever in control. It has been rightly said, “We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know the One who holds the future.”

The Importance Of Leadership

For the past eleven years of my life, I have been a fervent student of LEADERSHIP. I have lived, breathed, and slept leadership. I have learned as much as I could about the greatest leader to ever live and walk on this planet – Jesus. And I have immersed myself in the Bible, the best source of leadership teaching ever written.

I think a big part of the reason for my passion was what Dr. John Maxwell wrote in his introduction for the Maxwell Leadership Bible about leadership.

Where do most people go to learn leadership?

The answer to that question today is that they search many places. Some examine the world of politics. Other seek models in the entertainment industry. Many look to the world of business. Most people seem to look to successful CEOs, management consultants, and theoriticians with Ph.D.s to learn about leadership.

But the truth is, the best source of leadership teaching today is the same as it has been for thousands of years. If you want to learn leadership, go to the greatest Book on leadership ever written – the Bible.

The most critical problem facing the church today is the leadership vacuum that grew during the Twentieth Century. He says “the American church is dying due to lack of strong leadership.”

Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less!

Do you know Jesus was a coach – a leadership coach? He often asked profound questions which got people thinking and taking action.

This past week I stumbled across a new book I had recently ordered for my Kindle. In Chapter One of that book, Christian Mickelson writes “I believe that coaching is the most powerful force for change on Earth. Coaching has changed my life a hundred times over.” I agree.

For me, my leadership coach training has been the most valuable training of my entire life and career. My favorite testimony of the value of coaching came from my son Robbie who told me “Dad, the greatest gift you could have ever given me is your coaching.”

Blessings to be a leader who knows the difference!

Joseph
