On May 17 while I was at the JVAlert Live event in Arlington, VA, I received the sad news that Michael had passed away after a year and half battle with cancer. I felt devastated. On May 22, I went with my wife to Michael’s outdoor memorial service. When I came home, I began crying because I missed him so much.

Let me tell you about one of my best friends ever, who modeled a life of faith and integrity.

I first met Michael in the Fall of 1999, a few months after stepping away from my full-time anesthesia job at Culpeper Hospital. It turned out Michael had stepped away from his bread-and-butter job the same month as me to work full-time in his own consulting firm. Michael had been working as Project Manager for Chevron Oil Company for all of North America.

Within a few months of leaving his full-time job, Michael’s daughter Tori was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer and told she only had two weeks to live. She’s still alive and doing well 14 years later.

In early 2000, Michael and I began participating together in a weekly Bible study, my first one ever. Later that year, Michael and I began attending the same church. About a year after that, Michael agreed to join a weekly coaching group that I started along with Mark Jarvis and Matt Gregory. The four of us met weekly for coaching and lunch for 4 years. That’s where I came to realize the value of small group coaching.

Michael was the best strategic planner I ever met in my life. The slogan for his company Core Impact was “Strategists for Market Pre-eminence”. Michael took me and my company (Empower 2000) through three separate strategic planning processes over time.

In Aug 2001, Michael identified my coaching gift and recommended that I allocate some of my time for that. He was the very first person to tell me, “Joseph, you would make a great coach for executives.” It’s because of Michael’s influence that I took the year long training in 2007 to become a lifeforming leadership coach.

During his second strategic consult for my company in Jan 2008, Michael birthed the idea for the 30-60-100 increase and the 3×3 core focus areas. This 3×3 matrix has been on my Empower 2000 business cards for several years.

 
During Michael’s third strategic consult for Empower 2000 in May 2009, the idea for the 30-60-100 Master’s Mind Marketing for CEO’s was birthed. Without Michael I never would have discovered my gift of Dream Coaching and assembling high impact/performance dream teams.

And because of Michael, millions of people’s dreams will be empowered through Empower 2000 and those we are training to be Dream Coaches.

If I had to pick one word to summarize what Michael was about it would be POTENTIAL. Michael’s passion was MAXIMIZING POTENTIAL of those who would listen and were willing to grow.

One of the most important lessons I ever learned from Michael was the tricord of leverage is Rest, Reflection, and Revelation.

At Michael’s memorial service, Scott Stay, Michael’s son, shared Michael’s top three core values:

1. Freedom
2. Faith
3. Excellence

I also learned that Michael finished his 12-week online training for Marketplace Ministry with Harvest Evangelism on May 16, 2013 and died later that evening. Obviously, God wants others to carry on Michael’s dream to change the world by bringing the power and love of Jesus Christ to the marketplace. Will you join me in that effort?

Father, Papa, I feel so sad to lose such a good friend for the remainder of time I have left on this earth. I pray that you will bless Michael’s family with your peace that passes all understanding. May you comfort them during this very difficult transition. May you bless their family’s finances. May you bless Michael’s dreams and legacy through his family, through me, through Empower 2000, and through others he touched. In Yeshua’s name, I pray. Amen.

Michael Anthony Stay

Michael Anthony Stay Michael Anthony Stay was born May 28, 1957, in Denver, Colorado, to the late Clarence James and Leanna McLean Stay. He died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the age of 55. Michael is survived by his beautiful and loving spouse of 35 years, Cynthia “Cindy”; his two children, Victoria and Scott; his three grandchildren, Penelope, Brody, Violet; and his one sister, Susan MacLachlan. He left this world but went home to his Lord, living a life committed to his core values – faith and integrity.

As family and friends across the globe come together and celebrate the LIFE of Michael, what resonates most of this Man was his unwavering faith-driven, can-do attitude towards all that life brought.

In his early years, Michael served -up wicked curve balls as a southpaw for the University of Denver. He chose to transfer to Colorado State University where his greatest achievement was not earning a degree in Civil Engineering, but finding his life-long best friend and partner, Cindy. As Michael’s family grew with the birth of his two children, he navigated an illustrious 21-year career with Chevron USA, retiring as Project Manager of North America.

The next chapter of his life was in his own business, Core Impact, Inc., where the goal in his own words was to “Transform Businesses, Leaders and Communities. “This vision could be seen in his work with Career Partners in Culpeper County, mentoring business leaders and future leaders, and the many small ways Michael was committed by his faith to helping others. Following this path, he also earned a Master’s in Theology at Life Christian University and served as a teacher there. A leader among men, people were naturally drawn to his faith, integrity, and uncompromising love for friends and family

This world will miss him so very much, but our loss is a great gain for the hereafter we love you Michael, Dad, Baby! A celebration in Michael’s honor will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Mountain Run Lake. All are welcome for the casual gathering to share stories and memories. I have read at least five books by Bruce, but my favorite is “Secrets of the Vine” because in it are simple keys to living an abundant life.

In Chapter 1 titled “Stories from the Vineyard,” Bruce writes:

Have you ever been with someone very close to you who is about to die, someone who loves you, and wants to to leave you with a final word?

“Come closer.” You lean close, straining to hear. “I want to tell you something. I’ve waited until now … but I can’t wait any longer.” You know that you’ll remember every word for the rest of your life.

Now imagine that the person who is about to speak is Jesus. How closely would you listen? How long and hard would you ponder your Lord’s last words to you?

In the pages to come, I invite you to encounter, perhaps for the first time, Jesus’ words in John 15 – the heart of His final message to His disciples on the night he was betrayed. By dusk the following day, Jesus would be stretched out on a cross. His body stripped and pierced, His life ebbing away.

Jesus knew the words He spoke that night would echo in His friends’ memories for years. In time, the truth of His “deathbed conversation” would lead them to a whole new way of thinking. These final words are so little understood today that I’ve called them “secrets,” but I’m convinced that Jesus meant for their meaning to be clear. The time for parables and hidden meanings had passed. He wanted every follower for generations to come to know exactly how to live an overflowing life and understand what God would do to make it happen.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” (John 15:5,7-8)

We went hiking together for the first time at Scott’s Run in Fairfax County, near the Potomac River. That’s a beautiful park and we were blessed with a gorgeous day. This week, I stumbled across an outstanding video message by Joel Osteen titled “Recognizing What You Have.” This was so inspiring messages about pursuing your dreams that I listened to the entire message three times.

No matter what you are facing, God’s grace will be there to help you. Scripture says God has armed us for strength for every battle.

This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)

Early in his sermon, Joel Osteen asked people in his audience to hold up their Bibles and say with him, “”This is my Bible. I am what it says I am. I have what it says I have. I can do what it says I can do. Today I will be taught the Word of God. I boldly confess my mind is alert, my heart is receptive, I will never be the same.” That is a powerful declaration.

So often we focus on what we don’t have, how big our obstacles are, how bad the economy is, etc. Many people think, “I have this dream but don’t have the resources.”

However, everything we need to fulfill our destiny is within reach. God will always use something that is close to you. All David had was a slingshot and 5 stones and he slew Goliath. All Moses had was a stick (staff) and he freed two millions Israelites.

Today your dream may be big and your resources may be small, but don’t get discouraged. God is saying, “If you will use what you have, I will multiply your talent. I will multiply your resources. I will multiply your influence. You will defeat giants with less equipment. You will accomplish goals with less resources. Those obstacles that are holding you back are not permanent; they are temporary.”

You don’t know what God has put in your path. When God gives you a dream, he gives it in seed form. God gives you acorns, not oak trees. Your job is to plant the seeds.

This morning during the worship service, Pastor Mark Jenkins recalled the story of Vicky Armel, the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in the nearly 70 year history of the Fairfax County Police Department. That tragedy took place on May 8, 2006. Vicky was a resident of Culpeper, VA where I live.

Vicky grew up unchurched in an agnostic family and for most of her life she too was agnostic, firmly rejecting the idea of the resurrection of Jesus. That was until Easter of 2004 when she heard Mark Jenkins preach his message. When she left church that day, Vicky took home the book “The Case For Easter” by Lee Strobel and read it entirely that day. Within two weeks, she surrendered her life to Jesus.

A year later (Easter 2005), Vicky shared her testimony at Mountain View Community Church. And a year after that, she was shot in the line of duty. About 10,000 people went to Vicky’s memorial service at McLean Bible Church, with about 5,000 of those being police officers from all over the nation.

And during that memorial service, Vicky’s testimony was played for all those in attendance and several thousand copies of The Case For Easter were passed out. In her 3 minute testimony, Vicky shared how she became convinced that the resurrection of Jesus was true. You can listen to that here:

Honoring Vicky Armel

Lee Strobel was a devout atheist and former journalist for the Chicago Tribune. After his wife surrendered her life to Jesus, he went on a 3 year quest to prove the resurrection of Jesus was nonsense. In the process of examining the evidence that demanded a verdict, Strobel came to the conclusion that Jesus was real and did indeed rise from the dead.

Of the many world religions, only one claims that its founder returned from the grave. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the very cornerstone of Christianity.

The fact that Jesus rose from the dead means He’s alive. And that helps to confirm that the messages He spoke were true.

John 11:5-6 – Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

In his book Wild Goose Chase, Mark Batterson stresses the importance of coming out of the cage of routine, especially when you are stuck in a rut. He says “change of place + change of pace = change of perspective.” Mark writes, “Where you are geographically affects where you are spiritually. New places open us up to new experiences. They get us our of our routine and help us see God with new eyes.”

Mark learned the importance of pacing when he competed in his first triathlon. According to him, “How you start is not nearly as important as how you finish. And pacing is the key.” Mark says one of his greatest challenges is having enough margin in his life. The Sabbath is a weekly reminder that we don’t keep the planets in orbit. Rather God does. What most people need is a stop-doing list.

Now the next thing Mark wrote really struck home with me.

I have come to this conclusion: I don’t want to be good at lots of things; I want to be great at a few things. I would rather pour my heart, soul, mind, and strength into a few endeavors than do lots of things halfway.

What do you you need to give up? Where do you need to slow down? What changes do you need to make in your life to give God margin to work with?

The way you speed up is by slowing down. A Wild Goose (Holy Spirit) chase isn’t a mad dash. It’s more of a triathlon. And pacing yourself for the journey is critical.

On Tuesday morning March 5 I was prompted to host two webinars that day titled “5 Things You Need To Live Your Big Dreams.” During those webinars, I mentioned something Janet Daughtry teaches, namely the first thing you need to live your dreams is to DECLUTTER your life.

So what happens early on Wed morning? We have a major snow storm with ten inches of heavy, wet snow and lose our electricity for 3 days and our internet access for 4 days. Obviously, my plans went out the window for the remainder of that week.

However, God got his way. I ended up clearing off my 12 foot desk at home (decluttered my work space) and joined the Powell Wellness Center to swim and work out in the turtle pool. Those were things I had wanted to do for months.

In his book Wild Goose Chase, Mark Batterson writes:

You never know when or where the Wild Goose (Holy Spirit) is going to invade the routine of your life. Have you ever experienced an epiphany – a moment when God unexpectedly and unforgettably invaded the monotony of your life? That seems to be the way the Holy Spirit works, doesn’t it? He is predictably unpredictable. He loves to show up in wild places at wild times. (That’s what happened to Moses at the burning bush.)

One name for God in rabbinical literature is The Place. God is here, there, and everywhere. So it doesn’t matter where you are. You can be sitting in rush-hour traffic, working at your desk, or lying on your sofa. God can show up anytime, any place!

When I was nineteen years old, our family vacationed in Alexandria, Minnesota, just as we had every summer since I was born. I had just finished my freshman year a the University of Chicago and ha declared a major: pre-law. But I wasn’t sure that was what I really wanted to do or what God wanted me to do. So I asked God a dangerous question: “What do You want me to do with my life?” By the way, the only thing more dangerous that asking that question is not asking that question.

If you ask God that question with a willingness to do whatever He says, you’d better be prepared for God to disrupt the routine of your life. That question began what I retroactively call my “summer of seeking.” And it culminated on the last day of vacation during the last week of summer break. I knew in my spirit that God was calling me into full-time ministry.

What opportunities do you have in the next six months to go on a trip that could change not only your latitude but also your attitude? (Think spiritual retreat, mission trip, even vacation.)

For every prophecy about judgment on America, there seems to be another prophecy about a revival, renewal or awakening. The Lord has spoken to many people about another Great Awakening.

This prophetic declaration was given by Reinhard Bonnke in early Feb 2013. This is the same German evangelist who declared “All Africa Shall Be Saved,” and witnessed more than 55 million African souls make a decision to renounce Islam, witchcraft and other false gods – and commit to follow Jesus Christ – in just a nine-year period.

It’s so easy to lose the joy of living isn’t it? What happens is this: the sacred becomes routine. And we not only forfeit spiritual adventure but we also start losing the joy of our salvation. Chasing the Wild Goose (Holy Spirit) is the way to get it back. But that means coming out of the cage of routine. We need to change our routine, take some risks, and try new things.

Over the years I’ve come to appreciate a unique dimension of the Holy Spirit’s personality. Jesus called Him the Counselor. He comforts the afflicted. But like a good counselor, He afflicts the comfortable.

Where have you gotten too comfortable as a Christ follower? Where has life become too routine?

Recently after reading Wild Goose Chase, I began getting out of my cage of routine. As a result, this past week was amazing.

1) The “Partnering With God to Create Supernatural Health” webinar with Teri Secrest on Feb 26 was one of the most inspiring and enlightening ones on wellness I have ever hosted. That nearly broke the all-time registration record and we received raving reviews.

2) During our weekly Master’s Mind Marketing (MMM) meeting for the Water/Wellness tribe on Feb 27, we all agreed to work together as a team to establish a culture of wellness.

3) During our weekly MMM meeting for the Founding Father’s tribe on Feb 27, each of us refined our “one sentence” (i.e. legacy statement) with the help of our teammates. That turbocharged all of our engines.

4) I was contacted out-of-the-blue by someone in the New York City metropolitan area asking for my help with a huge project that could restore HOPE back to millions of Americans and people worldwide.

5) During our weekly MMM gathering for The Dream Summit on Feb 28, most of the tribe members decided to participate in the 60-60 Experiment and to develop an accountability system for that.

6) Yesterday morning, I finally completed a task to open the door to begin using a powerful online communication portal for the Master’s Mind Marketing Academy, branded now as “The world’s premier training center and network to Empower Dreams”.

7) And yesterday afternoon, Julia and I drove to a farm near Winchester Virginia for a fun gathering of lots of people associated with the Kangen alkaline, ionized water. The stories of how this water has changed people’s lives were amazing.

The Bible is an epic five-week, 10 hour television mini-series premiering March 3, 2013 on the History Channel from Emmy Award winning husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. For two hours each Sunday night millions of viewers will see “The Bible” come to life in a way never before seen. The final episode of the series will air on Easter Sunday and will feature the death and resurrection of Jesus. To help insure the accuracy of the miniseries, many Christian scholars served as advisors and hundreds of Christian leaders have given their endorsement. – (Outreach Magazine) “It is also a project close to Mr. Burnett’s heart. In the past couple of years the 52-year-old former paratrooper says he has become deeply religious, a transition he credits to Roma Downey, his wife since 2007. “It wasn’t until I met Roma that I truly understood my faith and it’s been a dynamic shift for me,” Mr. Burnett said. — Wall Street Journal

Famed television producer Mark Burnett tackles his projects with passion, but The Bible is a special labor of love. The 10-hour, five-part docudrama, which premieres March 3 on the History Channel, will span the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, presenting some of its best-known stories, including Noah’s Ark, the Exodus, Daniel in the lions’ den and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Former Touched By an Angel star Roma Downey, Burnett’s wife and fellow executive producer, heads a large international cast in the role of Mother Mary. Keith David, an Emmy winner for voice-over performances, will narrate with a musical score by Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer. “In terms of importance, nothing we’ve ever done, not Touched By an Angel, not Survivor, not The Voice, not The Apprentice, none of this could possibly compare to The Bible,” Burnett says.

“To us, as a family, we love the Bible. This is not a TV show to us. It’s images and sound and sacred text that people will still watch, way after our grandchildren are old people.” Since the entire Bible can’t be covered in 10 hours, the miniseries, which was filmed in Morocco, focuses on a select group of stories and features such compelling figures as Abraham, Moses and David. Some stories had to be compressed for artistic purposes. “In the end, what we’ve done is a meta-narrative, a grand narrative of emotionally connected stories. We know we’re not qualified to teach the Bible. We’re qualified to be good television producers and storytellers. By telling these emotionally connected, big stories, hopefully millions of people will reopen their Bibles,” Burnett says.

Downey came up with the idea for the miniseries a few years ago. “It is our obligation to tell the stories as written,” he says. “The stories are so brilliant and compelling.” The project will have broad appeal, he says. “If you know the Bible, you’ll enjoy seeing the stories come to life. If you’ve never read the Bible, I think you’ll love the stories,” he says. “There’s a reason the Bible is the most widely read book in the world.” – USA Today

Daly served as one of the show’s script consultants. He said the series may “serve as a spark to rekindle or kindle” the faith of viewers who may have strayed from Scripture. “(That) should be a great source of excitement for all of us.”

Having viewed various elements of the series, I would I rate their endeavor an unqualified success! The Bible mini-series rises above its forebears, shining with cinematic artistry, dramatic creativity, and essential biblical fidelity.
