Colors of the Wind
Yesterday evening I rode my bike 24 miles with my wife. Afterwards we ate dinner and then I read for while. At 10 pm, I went to bed and fell asleep quickly listening to the book of Proverbs on my Word Warrior Audio Bible.
This morning I woke up early and lay still resting and reflecting in bed for a while before Maui, my dog and God alarm clock, got me up at 4:15 am. The predominant thought in my mind was “I hate the spirit of judgment.” Then this scripture came to mind – “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” (James 2:13b)
After feeding Maui and letting her outside briefly, I came to my desk to journal. As I began journaling, I was prompted to check my Gmail account. Usually checking email is something I reserve for later in my day. A message from Marnie Pehrson grabbed my attention. Marnie wrote:
My daughter Jillian performed a vocal solo this evening for her recital – “Colors of the Wind” … I love the lyrics to this song… “You think the only people who are people Are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger. you’ll learn things you never knew you never knew.” I think that’s what I love about stories – hearing them, sharing them, promoting them – they let you walk in the footsteps of a stranger and learn things you never knew you never knew. :)
That prompted me to watch Jillian Pehrson’s Recital Performance (vocal solo) on May 25, 2012
After doing that I was prompted to find and watch several other YouTube videos for “Colors of the Wind” and to find the lyrics to the song. Then I received the nudge to share this song, these videos, and this message with you. Enjoy an absolutely beautiful song! :)!

You think I’m just an ignorant savage
And you’ve been so many places; I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see, if the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don’t know?
You don’t know…
You think you own whatever land you land on
The earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name.
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once never wonder what they’re worth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle in a hoop that never ends
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or let the eagle tell you were he’s been
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
How high does a sycamore grow?
If you cut it down then you’ll never know
And you’ll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain
We need to paint with all the colours of the wind
You can own the earth and still
All you’ll own is earth until
You can paint with all the colours of the wind
The importance of MERCY
Mt 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy
Mt 9:13 “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
James 2:13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Pr 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
Lu 17:13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!“
2 Tim 1:2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jude 1:2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
Jude 1:21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Blessings to walk the footsteps of a stranger!
