The longer I live and the more I experience, the more I become convinced of the importance in simplifying my life.

Instead of us owning our possessions, they can easily end up owning us or at least consuming much of our time.

Our basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter. Everything else is gravy.

Have you ever heard the expression, “The harder I work the further behind I get.” I’ve been on that path far too many times.

If you really want to be a godly steward with your talent, your must let go and let God.

STOP trying to run the universe. Enjoy each day. Take care of yourself. Honor God with the firstfruits of your talent and He’ll take care of the rest.

According to Bernadette Doyle, “The fastest way to have everything is to focus on one thing.”

What will be that ONE THING for you?

Incidentally, I was first referred to Bernadette by Kevin Nations on June 29, 2009 in his email titled “There’s a BIG DIFFERENCE between those who SOAR and those who STRUGGLE.”

The next day, June 30, I listened to Bernadette’s teleseminar titled “How to Do What You Love, When You Want, Wherever You Want, With Whoever You Want, and Make The Money You Want.”

I have come to discover Bernadette is someone worth listening to. She’s a great teacher and definitely knows what she is talking about when it comes to more leads, more clients, and more sales.

Bernadette’s business has tripled for 3 consecutive years, allowing her to generates more than $1 million in sales annually working out of her home just 3 days per week. She made this choice to work part-time out of her home to be able to spend lots of quality time with her two little children.

That kind of flexible lifestyle where one can give generously to others is very appealing to me. I’ll bet it’s appealing to you too.

Always remember there is tremendous POWER in focus. White light can be focused through a prism to create a laser beam that can cut through steel.

For me, focusing on completing and improving these daily messages for 30 Days To Breakthrough will play a very important part in my eternal legacy.

LESSON
In his book “The Life You’ve Always Wanted,” John Ortberg teaches spiritual disciplines for ordinary people.

In Chapter 5 titled “An Unhurried Life,” John explains “the practice of ’slowing’.” He states that not long after moving to Chicago, he called the wisest spiritual mentor he has ever known to ask for spiritual direction. John described the pace at which things tended to move in his current setting. He told about the rhythms of his family life and the present condition of his heart. Then John asked what he needed to do to be spiritually healthy. After a long pause, the wise mentor answered “You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” After writing down that lesson, John asked “Now what else is there?” Another long pause and then the answer came “There is nothing else.”

John states: “The lives of the hurry-sick lack simplicity. Hurried people cannot love. Today we have largely traded wisdom for information. Love and hurry are incompatible. Jesus never hurried. Solitude is the remedy for the busyness that charms.”

To be spiritually healthy, you must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life!

And journaling is one of the best disciplines to slow down your RPM’s from 10,000 to 5,000 to 500.

How can writing down 3 MIT’s each morning simplify your life?

On January 1, the first day of this new year and decade, I wrote a YDB devotional titled “The Power Of Less” referring to a book by Leo Babauta about simplifying your life. That book and another one that Leo wrote are having a profound impact on my life.

My keyword for life is SIMPLIFY, although sometimes when I look at my desk I question if that’s aspirational or a true value.

Leo writes, “There has never before been an age in which we could get so much done so quickly. There also has never before been an age in which we were so overwhelmed with information and tasks, so overloaded with emails and things to read and watch, so stressed by the incredible demands of our lives.”

“We are drinking from a fire hose of information, with no idea how to reduce the flow.”

How do we find calm in the chaos? “What’s the alternative to information and task overload? The solution lies in setting limits to how much we consume and do. It lies in making the most of our time by focusing on the most important things. It all comes down to making choices.”

Our lives are better when we simplify them, when we cut down on the noise and are able to enjoy the things we love. Simplicity boils down to two steps: 1) Identify the essential, 2) Eliminate the rest.

One of the things that Leo talks about is purposing your day by identifying your MIT’s – Most Important Tasks. Your MIT’s are the tasks that you most want or need to get done today. In Leo’s case, he identifies 3 MIT’s each morning, and focuses on accomplishing those. At least one of those MIT’s is related to one of his annual or life goals to keep his dream moving forward every day.

May Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, attributed much of her success to setting 6 MIT’s each day. About a month ago, I started writing down just 3 MIT’s each day (like Leo) rather than 6. It’s been my experience so far that this results in more focus, greater impact, more time to take care of my temple (body), and less stress.

I’d like you to share your comments about this below.

Why is it so important to redeem the time? 1) Time is not recoverable. 2) Time is our most valuable earthly possession.

What one new habit will you focus on in January 2010 to set the stage for the most fruitful year and decade of your life?

I want to start off this new year and new decade by sharing with YOU one of the most profound messages about habits I have ever come across.

In his book “The Greatest Salesman in the World,” Og Mandino wrote “Good habits are the key to all success!” Dr. Mike Murdock, founder of the Wisdom Center, writes “Successful people do daily what unsuccessful people do occasionally!”

Dr. Jerry Falwell was known as a man of “Every day” – living out daily habits that bore much fruit. One of Dr. John Maxwell’s latest books is titled “Make Today Count: The Secret of Your Success Is Determined by Your Daily Agenda.”

Do you get it? Good habits are the key to YOUR success. But how do you go about establishing good habits?

I believe in Chapter 5 of his book “The Power of Less,” Leo Babauta shares one of the simplest and most powerful answers. Here is what Leo writes:

“The only way you’ll form long-lasting habits is by applying the Power of Less: focus on one habit at a time, one month at a time, so that you’ll be able to focus all your energy on creating that one habit.”

Leo then recommends a 30-DAY CHALLENGE. Here’s how it works:

1. Select one habit for the Challenge. Only one habit per month. You can choose any habit – whatever you think will have the biggest impact on your life.

2. Write down your plan. You will need to specifically state what your goal will be each day, when you’ll do it, what your “trigger” will be (the event that will immediately precede the habit that’s already a part of your routine – such as exercising right after you brush your teeth), who you will report to (see below).

3. Post your goal publicly. Tell as many people as possible that you are trying to form your new habit. I suggest an online forum, but you could email it to coworkers and family and friends or otherwise get the word out to a large group.

4. Report on your progress daily. Each day, tell the same group of people whether or not you succeeded at your goal.

THE RULES

There are only a few rules you need to follow to make this Challenge a success. If you follow these rules, it would be hard for you not to form a new habit by the end of the 30 days.

Do only one habit at a time. Do not break this rule, because I assure you that if you do multiple habits at once, you will be much less likely to succeed. Trust me – I’ve tried both ways many times, and in my experience there is 100% failure for forming multiple habits at once, and a 50-80% success if you do just one habit at a time – depending on whether you follow the rest of these rules.

Choose an easy goal. Don’t decide to do something really hard, at least for now. Later, when you’re good at habit changes, you can choose something harder. But for now, do something you know you can do every day. In fact, choose something easier than you think you can do every day. If you think you can exercise for 30 minutes a day, choose 10 minutes – making it super easy is one of the surest ways to ensure you’ll succeed.

Choose something measurable. You should be able to say, definitively, whether you were successful or not today. If you choose exercise, set a number of minutes or something similar (20 minutes of exercise daily, for example). Whatever your goal, have a measurement.

Be consistent. You want to do your habit change at the same time every day, if possible. If you’re going to exercise, do it at 7 a.m. (or 6 p.m.) every day, for example. This makes it more likely to become a habit.

Report daily. You could check in every 2 or 3 days, but you’ll be more likely to succeed if you report daily. This has been proven over and over again in the Challenges.

Keep a positive attitude! Expect setbacks now and then, but just note them and move on. No embarrassment in this challenge.

MY HABIT TO FOCUS ON IN JANUARY 2010

Here is what Jesus told me during my 2-way journaling time today:

Randy, the habit I want you to focus on in January is Journaling using “Yesterday… and Prayer Power” and “3 MIT’s (Most Important Tasks).” Every day I want you to take at least one action step toward your annual goal of selling one million copies of UNCOMMON Journaling for Breakthroughs. As Seth said, set a goal of selling 500 copies of UJFB in January. You can take a step toward that goal today by writing a YDB devotional about habits today. Start now. Share what I have placed on your heart. Call it The Power of Less.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for working in my life to reveal the secret of establishing powerful new habits – focusing on only one each month. Touch the hearts of those who read and listen to this message to take the 30-Day challenge and apply this very important life lesson. Speak to each one of them as to what one habit You want them to focus on during the next 30 days. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen and Hallelujah!

There seems to be two distinct camps when it comes to how people are viewed within an organization. They are considered primarily as assets or liabilities (costs). In my experience, it is the camp that believes its human resources are costs, overhead expenses much like any other expense that can be reduced or eliminated for short term gain, that is more prevalent. Most organizations would loudly protest! After all, they go to great lengths to communicate how they value their employees and make every effort to “do the right thing” with them. However, I believe the ultimate test is in how people are accounted for in the organization’s financials – salary expense, headcount, benefit expense, training expense, etc. all of which are costs typically most affected by “belt tightening” when last quarter’s (or last year’s) earnings turn out to be less than expected.

Treating people as if they truly are assets will not only impact how they get accounted for by your organization, but also will positively affect your organization’s long-term financial performance.

COMMUNICATION Matters

The INTER-NET is the #1 business tool of the 21st century – period. A new day is dawning and actually upon us when the Internet will be reclaimed by those who manifest Excellence, Integrity, Commitment, and Simplicity in their work and LOVE in their relationships.

Truisms about the Internet and Communication

• The Internet was the number one business invention of the 20th century
• The Internet is the number one business tool of the 21st century
• The Internet is the super HIGHway of communication
• When the enemy attacks, he ALWAYS attacks communication first!
• According to Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of MovieGuide, “He who controls the MEDIA controls the culture!” And the INTERNET is the most powerful type of media.
• Web 2.0+++ (Social Media) is at least 100x more powerful than Web 1.0 (traditional websites) when used STRATEGICALLY
• The larger your network, the more important communication becomes.
• Those who network the networks gain the most LEVERAGE. Leverage equals speed.
• Blogging is transformational. A daily BLOG (email) with short stories of changed lives is the #1 way to grow your network and build strong relationships!
