Dear Joseph, Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending my niece Olivia’s graduation ceremony at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, south of Harrisburg. By far, this was my favorite one ever. And the graduation speech by the keynote speaker was the best one I have ever heard. Many others agreed. His take-away message was love, love, love. And his key scripture was 1 John 4:18 – “perfect love casts out fear”. I was very impressed by the history of Messiah College, its mission, motto, and foundation values. The college motto, “Christ Preeminent,” points to a full and rich understanding of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith relevant to every dimension of life. The phrase points to Jesus Christ as both “the ground for personal salvation and the pattern for life and service.” Blessings to love, love, love! Joseph

Yesterday morning I was inspired to write my most profound message ever titled “Sunday Inspiration: The Three Most Powerful Words.” In response to that, my Uncle Richard wrote, “Thanks, Joseph. A wonderful movie ‘October Baby’ expresses well the power of forgiveness.” That email led me to spend time this morning learning more about the movie October Baby. Here is what I discovered.

On October 1, I received an email from Nancy Slocum titled “LOOKS LIKE A MUST SEE MOVIE: COURAGEOUS.” In her email, Nancy wrote, “Spread the word. It’s a clarion call from the Lord for men and the next generation of fathers to step up in their role as FATHERS / SPIRITUAL LEADERS and into their full destiny. It’s all about HONOR. It’s time for Christian families to stand up and stand out to be the most powerful role model for the family unit for the world to see … not the other way around! It all starts at home and it’s not too late even if our children are grown! God help and teach us by Your Spirit and have mercy upon us!”

It’s hard starting out in marriage. Money is usually tight. You’re getting used to new responsibilities. Even though your love is young and energetic, you find yourself dealing with disagreements and expectations you didn’t really see coming. As Barbara and I watched our children marry, we wondered what we should do to help. At the same time, we didn’t want to meddle. As an older man, I wanted to encourage my sons and sons-in-law as they began to shoulder a husband’s responsibility. I decided to bless them and give them a man-to-man charge.

Boy 2010 went by fast. It seemed like a big blur until I started to review highlights from my journal and post photos for the entire year at Flickr. Then I was able to appreciate how rich the year really was. Our family is SO BLESSED. And we are grateful for EVERY good gift that comes from above, from the Father of lights. This year, with our combined email lists, we are sending our special greeting to more than 2,000 people. We consider our family Christmas card one of the best gifts we can give to you because it’s the gift of ourselves, sharing our lives with you.
