How does one overcome a severe addiction?

For more than a year, I’ve been sharing an uncommon revelation from the Holy Spirit that the Internet is God’s supernatural highway of communication. I experienced this first hand as my own spiritual journey to salvation was closely tied to the web.

In yesterday devotional, I shared how God shouted to me “put away the evil” while I was “doing the dew” on the morning of Feb 10 and then Pastor Matt preached a corresponding outstanding message titled “Why Everyone Needs Negative Friends.” During Matt’s sermon, Lynndey Reid came on stage to share her personal testimony of how God helped her overcome a severe addiction. As Lynndey authentically shared her powerful story of God’s grace and mercy, my eyes flooded with tears. Here is an excerpt from the end of Lynndey’s testimony:

“We knew we couldn’t fix ourselves and the only one that could restore us as individuals and our marriage & family was the Lord.  We came back in October 2006 determined to recommit our lives to the Lord.  In January we both started attending Life Groups – we knew we needed to connect with other believers.  We were still struggling with the alcohol but the Lord is so gracious.  Because we turned back to Him, He met us every step of the way.  We became desperate to get rid of the control that alcohol had over our lives.

We missed one Sunday when Randy Peck shared, but we listened to the MP3 message [downloaded from the web]. We ended up listening to it three times and all we heard was the power of prayer, fasting, and studying the Word.  We fasted for our first time the next Friday which ended up being our first Friday in 3 years without alcohol.  During that day we didn’t feel like anything was happening, but the Lord moved – and broke the chains of addiction in our lives.  Drinking was once the focus of our lives but Praise God it no longer has control over us.

James 5:19 says:
Brethren if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

If you have a friend who is wandering – don’t shy away from speaking the truth of God’s love into their lives & praying for them.  Also, we never know where someone is when they come through the church doors.  They may be like Chris & I were – at the end of their rope.  You welcomed us and we can’t thank you enough.  Let us always be a body of believers with the arms of Jesus open wide.”

What idols do I have in my life?

The purpose of these devotionals is to bless you and your family – to change your life – hopefully so you will bless other people and their families. These messages are intended to help build solid, Christ-centered homes.

Living in America, it’s nearly impossible not to sense the rising tension of people around us. Yet, God tells us not to fear.

Two days ago I had lunch with Rev. Mark Jarvis, the person who led me to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ seven years ago. Of all the people I have ever known, Mark has had the greatest impact on me spiritually. He always takes a stand on righteousness. As a young Marine, Mark earned the Purple Heart. But more importantly, Mark learned to persist regardless of circumstances. That’s what God wants us to do. That’s what God wants me to do.

While we were eating, Mark told me about a recent law that was passed. When I told him, “We can’t legislate morality,” Mark told me every law is a reflection of someone’s morality. Mark has told me several times in the past few months, “Idolatry always leads to immorality.” What is idolatry? Putting anything or anyone ahead of God.

Later that evening, I went for a bike ride and a short run. Immediately afterwards, I walked our dog. As I was coming back home, I came across a neighbor and her mother. I joined them for another 2 miles of walking. At the end of that walk, my neighbor’s mother told me she’s pressing into God for joy and peace. Isn’t that what God wants each of us to do – to press into Him.

Personal accountability is where reformation starts. It begins with me, not you. I’m choosing to humble myself, pray, seek God’s face, and turn from my own wicked ways. I’ve got a lot to work on. What about you? What needs to change with your daily habits to seek God’s face? Who is holding you accountable?

Our greatest threat in America is not the terrorists from without, but the terrorists from within – people who openly and publically put God down and flagrantly violate his Laws. Judgment is coming to America. As Yale professor Stephen Carter said, “A society that ignores the moral side of life is going to go down the tubes.” I will be prepared. Will you?

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

God instructs His children to be holy because He is holy. Sexual immorality and holiness are incompatible. Many people wrongly think that what they do alone in the privacy of their own homes won’t adversely affect them.

“New porn” targets the temptation of the imagination. Just enough skin, just enough seduction to get lost in the lust of imagination. The new porn isn’t the latest hard core illegal download, or in the magazines behind the counter. It’s sitting on your coffee table and on your teenagers favorites on the computer. The new porn is sexual driven material on Myspace, MTV shows, and new music videos. It’s made its way into mainstream America.

Yesterday morning, after spending time to pray and read the Bible, I turned on the TV intending to watch a marriage DVD. However, the Holy Spirit led me to first change the default channel to TBN. Immediately, I was struck by an interview of Suzie Krabacher, a former Playboy centerfold, telling her story about “The Price of Porn.” The interview was being conducted by Lorna Dueck, Executive Producer of “Listen Up TV.”

This led me to check out www.listenupTV.com, where I found an excellent, 30 minute, on-line video titled ” Cracking Pornography.” [www.listenuptv.com/video/277.wmv] This video led me to two more great links (below).
